The Ad/PR Club is a club that is offered to Ad/PR majors and to recruit members every year the club has pizza and just meets to discuss what the club is and who is interested. The club meets about once a month on Thursdays during chapel towards the beginning of  each month. To become a member of the club you must pay $50 for either the Advertising side or just the Public Relations side, AAF or PRSA/PRSSA. Or you can pay $100 to be a part of both of them. Every meeting the officers bring in someone in the professional field to speak on their chosen profession or a certain topic. In the past the officers have brought in people who head up the PR program at ACU, work at businesses such as the Grace Museum, Texas Tech school and Neiman Marcus. This year the Advertising President is Melanie Langston. She has put in many hours with her fellow Public Relations President, Holly Tittle as well as the other officers, preparing for each chapel meeting, the events that are planned for members of the Ad/PR Club, luncheons, and a budget that is given to them each year from SA.

One of the events that is offered to members of the Ad/PR Club is Pro Am Day. This day is held in Fort Worth, Texas and entails several events. This year the students were all in a board room together and listened to a speaker about how to interview and get a job in the current economy. The students then broke up to meet with different professionals who looked at their resume and fixed it, according to them. Usually 3 or 4 different professionals get to look at your resume and critique it. It is great to get this kind of feedback from current professionals and to see what the workplace is looking for. If the professional has their business card with them as well it is always a good foot in the door to ask for it and email your resume to the company later. Everyone is then invited to a lunch, which is always high class and the students who participated in the days events usually have a topic to discuss. This year ACU presented on the Ipad and how ACU’s student run newspaper is the first to be available on there. After lunch, the students were then invited to take part in a tour of a real life agency. This year it was GCG Agency. The students learned all sorts of things including how an agency ran/worked and how to apply for a position at an agency.

The club also offers luncheons that the students can participate in. You can go to those and learn from the guest speakers, all about what they do and how they do it, not to mention while enjoying some great food. These are usually hosted at the Hardin Simmons Campus. Another important event that the Ad/PR club lets students know about and covers is the event over Social Media usually held in Round Rock, Texas hosted by the University there. The event is good for first timers learning about social media, because in the event they bring in lots of guest speakers who all cover the topic in a different way. The event is all day and a person walks away knowing a lot about social media and gaining professional knowledge in the situation. Also professionals are there to help look over your resume and portfolio and to give advice where needed.

Although this club may sound like its not very interesting or you feel you don’t have the time to join up any clubs, this is a very good club to join on campus. You meet a wide variety of people and it looks great on your resume especially if you were an officer in the club and can put that down on your resume for the future. Many people are unaware that there is such a club available to students in this chosen major/profession, but there is and the quicker you get involved and the more things you get involved with, the better.

E-mail Teaser- Resume reviewing, portfolio help, learning from professionals and student officers. What is this, you may ask? Ad/PR Club at Abilene Christian University offers a wide variety of events for students. A club like this on campus for students looks great on your resume for future employers. It is also great to get involved in some way and this club does it.

Sidebar- Officer positions include: President for Public Relations, Vice President for Public Relations, President for Advertising, Vice President for Advertising, Secretary, and Treasurer. Sponsers include Dave Hogan for Public Relations and Joyce Haley for Advertising.

Tweet- At ACU a wide variety of clubs are offered, one not so commonly known as the Ad/PR Club. The Ad/PR Club offers many different events for students to enjoy.

Volcano Erupts after 200 years in Iceland

What will become of our lifestock? How will we survive? What about our lifestyles and how we eat? These are a few questions raised by the people in Southern Iceland. After almost 200 years Volcano Eyjafjallajokull erupted, leaving concerns that there could potentially be a more dangerous eruption at a volatile volcano nearby. A state of emergency was declared, with evacuation centers set up near the town of Hella. Scientists say it is difficult to predict what comes next.

{March 9, 2010}   Virtue Ethics

To understand Virtue Ethics you really first must have an understanding of what is right or wrong to you as a person. You can grow up being taught that it is wrong to lie. Your parents tell you that it is wrong and there will always be a consequence to your telling one little lie. But what if you are confronted with a situation where one of your best friends ask you to lie for them because it will help them out tremendously. Do you lie or tell the truth? And if you lie will there be consequences to your actions, will it be wrong or right? If you tell the truth will you lose that best friend you have had for years? We are taught that we should desire certain outcomes and that we should want to accomplish certain goals by our actions. You have to decide if what you are doing is the right or wrong thing to you as a person.

{February 16, 2010}   Simplicity Overrated; I Think So

Why do so many web pages/websites use complicated designs and pull down menus? In reality all you need is a simple way to manuever through the website. It is really hard to stay focused for anyone, when there is a lot of business going on. People like simplicity. If they can get to what they want or find what they need more easily then they will stick around, otherwise it’s a lost cause with them. Right-click helps medium-skilled users because it’s a consistent interaction technique that works the same everywhere. User Engagement Levels; an example of a high-engagement design is the seventh and final book in the Harry Potter series. The first 100 pages of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows make no sense unless you’re intimately familiar with the first 6 volumes in the series and can remember every detail about a profusion of magical objects and an earlier plot twist. Loyal Users: Higher Engagement Levels, some websites can build user loyalty and grow user engagement levels across subsequent site visits. Such sites can gradually introduce more advanced features for those users who become sufficiently committed to the site. People who tend to look around on your site tend to not be as excited about what you are doing to set it up. As you set up your site, you have to remember that not everyone is as knowledgeable about the subject as you are. Although, at times it can be hard to remember this as you are setting the site up, it can be very helpful to the people looking at the site.

{October 1, 2009}   Hello world!

I watched The Buzz: True Blood Season 2 In Production with HBO Podcasts. I am a true fan of this show, but due to being out of cable right now I have been unable to watch it. This let me catch up in some sense with the show. The podcast did a real good job of interviewing each castmember. Each person had a little more to say about the new season and about what is to be expected. The Buzz with HBO kind of has their own music they introduce with every show. The entrance music on this one was ok, I would have liked to have seen a little more on the gothic side and a longer entrance with the music. The Podcast I watched was very well done. I couldn’t really see anything I didn’t like about it, except for maybe on some of the interviews they could have maybe been done a little better. I didn’t feel like they were really wanting to do the interview and weren’t really into it. But besides that I really enjoyed watching the podcast. It was very entertaining catching up.
